FAIRFIELD, Calif., Feb. 23, 2009- City of Fairfield representatives are calling out to locals for their amateur photography skills.  The City would like Fairfield residents to send in their photographs of local businesses to not only showcase their talents, but help promote spending locally.  This request stems from the City’s Buy in Fairfield campaign introduced in December of 2008.

Buy in Fairfield aims to promote local spending whether purchasing toys, electronics, automobiles or even groceries.  When consumers purchase goods and services locally, the sales tax from their purchases remains in the City and directly supports improvements of the area.

The photos will be featured on the BuyInFairfield.com website and the Fairfield4Business.com website.  The photos can be of streetscapes of Fairfield’s business districts, people dining at Fairfield restaurants, Fairfield storefronts, and any other positive images of Fairfield’s business community.

“We would like Fairfield residents to send us their photographs of local businesses for the Buy in Fairfield Web site. Residents can showcase their photographs at the same time they are promoting shopping and dining locally and featuring a local business.  When you shop locally, your money comes full circle back to you.  You invest in local businesses which creates local jobs and the sales tax dollars generated will maintain your streets and parks and provide vital City services like police and fire..” said Cynthia Garcia, City Management Analyst.

The city of Fairfield is encouraging shoppers to support local business this holiday season as a means to improving the quality of life for its residents.

The city recently launched a community awareness campaign to coincide with National Buy Local Week, "Be Local, Buy Local, Benefit Fairfield."

The new program aims to educate the community about the benefits of making purchases locally year round and urges residents to regenerate the local economy by shopping in Fairfield first for all goods and services from groceries to new cars to the family night out.

Whether buying electronics, toys, books or games; all goods purchased in Fairfield generate a portion of sales tax that is contributed to city services like youth sports and the Matt Garcia Youth Center, senior services, street maintenance, parks, police and fire.

"Start spending locally this holiday season and continue the habit everyday for a strong business community and a healthy Fairfield," said Cynthia Garcia, management analyst for the city of Fairfield. "It's important to support growth and improvement in our hometown economy during this time of nationwide financial struggle. It's easy to do this by making regular purchases in town."

Businesses around Fairfield will soon start posting 'buy local' promotions in their storefronts, and about 5,000 residents will open their water bills to find paperwork extolling the municipal benefits of shopping in town.

The city campaign promotes local purchasing by pointing out the ways that sales tax benefits local residents -- parks, police, firefighting and street maintenance, among others.

FAIRFIELD - Buy, buy and don't go too far to do it.

That is essentially the message the city and local businesses will push this month when it launches its 'Buy Local' campaign, just in time for the holiday shopping season. The fliers will start appearing in residents' water bills the week of Thanksgiving, city management analyst Cynthia Garcia said.

'It will be an educational piece really, talking to Fairfield residents about why it's important to shop locally,' Garcia said. 'When they go shop this holiday season, not only are they helping local businesses, but they're also helping themselves.'

For the city, it's a no-brainer.

One percent of all sales tax goes to the city in which it was paid. The more Fairfield residents shop in the city, more money flows to the city and to city programs. In 2007, shoppers making thousands of purchases generated $19.9 million in sales tax for Fairfield.

Since announcing the idea in July, the marketing firm behind the project met with business leaders and owners to craft the details. Among other things, they settled on a shopping cartoon bee as the logo, to represent the slogan 'Be local, buy local, benefit Fairfield.'

Westfield Solano mall General Manager Todd Falduti said he backs the program in part because it promises to encourage local shoppers during the most important time of year for the mall.

'We always want to do everything we can to encourage local shopping, not only for the sales tax return but for the benefit of the community,' he said.

Therese Doyle, owner and project manager of the local Ethan Allen store, is enthusiastic about the program, she said. She offered to wear an oversized bee suit for the promotional material. Doyle said she hopes to keep her store in customers' minds during the Christmas season, which is typically quiet for home furnishings.

'My thoughts were to keep it very simple so that people really understand where our taxes go here in town,' Doyle said. 'I don't think very many people are aware of how much it helps with the police officers and the fire department and the streets and the sidewalks.'

Buy in Fairfield

Posted on: 06/29/08

By Brian Miller and Karl Dumas

During difficult economic times, retail sales can become sluggish as consumers cut back their discretionary purchases. Of course, this impacts local governments' ability to fund services as retail sales tax receipts decrease when consumers stop buying.

Recently, most cities in California have seem a decrease in sales tax receipts because of the slowing economy.  Locally it's no secret that many Fairfield retail businesses are struggling with sales declines.

To help address this issue, the city is launching a "Buy Local" Campaign to encourage residents to spend their shopping dollars in Fairfield.  The city is hiring a local marketing company, Infuze Marketing, a local photographer and a printer to produce marketing materials to help promote the campaign.
